As a judge, Alexis and the player have death and freedom in their hands, and symbolically, the gameplay revolves around the player's freedom of choice. The French Revolution was, at least on the surface, all about freedom - and the game proper opens with the protagonist monologuing about how the new era was marked by " enchanted by the idea of freedom". Alexis can defy this at the murderer's trial by letting her go free.
